Castle of Galve de Sorbe
Spain, Spain
Castle of Galve de Sorbe, also known as Castillo de los Zúñiga, rises on a hill northwest of Galve de Sorbe village in Guadalajara province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.
Built in the 15th century by the Zúñiga family over an earlier Muslim castillete ceded by Infante Don Juan Manuel—who had rebuilt a prior Andalusian fortress in the 13th century—it features a robust montano design with a strong tower keep, surrounding almenated walls two meters thick forming an irregular quadrilateral plan, four square corner towers bearing Zúñiga coats of arms, and two circular ones on the east and south walls including a hemispherical vaulted southern tower.
Passing through noble houses like Orozco, Mendoza, Infantado, Pastrana, and Alba before state ownership and private acquisition in 1971, it suffered Carlist War destruction in 1873 yet saw recent private conservation efforts amid its Sierra Norte natural park setting.
