Verified Castle of Gazteluzar

Irun, Spain, Spain

Castle of Gazteluzar, also known as Gaztelu Zahar or "Old Castle," is a 16th-century fortress ruin overlooking the Bidasoa River in Behobia near Irun, Gipuzkoa province, Basque Country, Spain.

Commissioned in 1512 by King Ferdinand the Catholic and designed by Diego de Vera, this triangular stone stronghold with three towers, 21-meter walls, cannon embrasures, and a western entrance was completed by 1518 to defend the Castilian-French border against Navarrese and French incursions.

Captured in 1521 during a failed Navarrese reconquest attempt and site of the 1522 Battle of San Marcial, it was controversially ordered demolished by Emperor Charles V in 1542 to prevent enemy reuse, with materials repurposed for Hondarribia's walls, leaving evocative remnants restored in 2023 amid scenic hiking paths.
