Castle of Guardamar del Segura
Guardamar del Segura, Spain, Spain
Castle of Guardamar del Segura is a medieval fortress crowning a hill overlooking the Segura River estuary in Guardamar del Segura, Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain.
Founded in the late 13th century by King Alfonso X the Wise atop earlier Arab, Iberian, Phoenician, and Roman settlements, its walls with five masonry towers and Renaissance bastions like the Gunpowder Bulwark defended against North African pirate raids, housing a royal town until devastating 1829 earthquakes destroyed much of it.
Now an archaeological site with restored paths revealing millennia of occupation through artifacts like Iberian cauldrons and Islamic burials, it offers free access to panoramic coastal views amid pine forests planted by Francisco Mira.
