Castle of Guevara-Gebara
Spain, Spain
Castle of Guevara-Gebara is a medieval fortress atop a hill in the hamlet of Gebara (Guevara), Barrundia municipality, Álava province, Basque Country, Spain, originally constructed in the 11th century by the powerful Ladrón de Guevara noble family during the War of the Bands.
Strategically positioned to dominate the surrounding valley, it served as their stronghold amid late medieval factional conflicts, later paired with a 14th-century tower-palace at the hill's base built by the same lineage.
Demolished in 1839 during the First Carlist War by liberal forces using over 2,500 kilos of gunpowder after a siege, its ruins—including substantial walls and a surviving tower—now offer panoramic views accessible by an easy hike, declared a Cultural Interest Site.
