Castle of Lizar (ruins)
Spain, Spain
Castle of Lizar, also known as Castillo de Lizar or Frigiliana Castle, is a Moorish fortress ruin perched on Cerro de la Sabina hilltop in Frigiliana, Málaga province, Spain, built between the 9th and 11th centuries to defend the Axarquía region and control vital routes.
Spanning around 4,000 square meters with an irrigation aqueduct, it served as a refuge for Moriscos during the 1568-1571 Alpujarras rebellion until Christian forces under Luis de Requesens captured and demolished it in 1569 after the Battle of Peñón de Frigiliana, reusing stones for local buildings.
Today, only scant wall remnants survive amid trails offering sweeping coastal and mountain views, accessible via a rewarding hike from Frigiliana's whitewashed streets.
