Castle of Molina de Aragón
Molina de Aragón, Spain, Spain
Castle of Molina de Aragón dominates the town of the same name in Guadalajara province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, from a commanding hilltop as one of the region's largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses.
Originating from a 10th-11th century Moorish stronghold built over Celtiberian remains, it was expanded in the 12th century by Manrique de Lara, first lord of Molina, featuring a vast external albacara wall with numerous square towers, an inner fortress with six large towers (four well-preserved), thick crenellated ramparts, and the prominent Torre de Aragón—a pentagonal 19th-century reconstruction atop the original Arab site.
Key to border defense between Castile and Aragón during the Reconquista, it housed lords' residences, stables, and dungeons, now serving as a museum showcasing its military evolution and panoramic valley views.
