Castle of Montefrío
Montefrío, Spain, Spain
Castle of Montefrío is a 14th-century Nasrid fortress dominating the hilltop above Montefrío village in Granada province, Spain, constructed around 1352 under Yusuf I by the same architect behind the Alhambra's Alcazaba to guard the volatile Christian-Muslim frontier. Featuring two enclosures with a large homage tower, three parade grounds, two cisterns, and housing for ruler Aben Ismael III (later Yusuf V), it surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs in 1486 after Íllora's fall, passing to the Fernández de Córdoba family who repurposed its lower area and built the Renaissance Church of la Encarnación atop the ruins. Now reduced to fragmented walls amid the historic-artistic village declared in 1982, it symbolizes Granada's border conflicts with panoramic views over olive groves and the Genil valley.
