Castle of Pambre
Spain, Spain
Castle of Pambre is a well-preserved 14th-century medieval fortress in Pambre parish, Palas de Rei municipality, Lugo province, Galicia, northwestern Spain, built around 1375 by Galician noble Gonzalo Ozores de Ulloa on a rocky hill overlooking the Pambre River.
Renowned as Galicia's finest example of military architecture, it features a square layout with a central keep tower, four corner towers, irregular outer walls adapting to the terrain, a semicircular arched main entrance bearing the Ulloa coat of arms, and an internal 12th-century Romanesque chapel to Saint Peter.
One of the few fortresses to withstand the destructive Irmandiño revolts of 1467, it later guarded the Camino de Santiago French Way under Ferdinand II's 1478 decree, collecting tolls and protecting pilgrims while passing to the Monterrey family.
