Castle of Penela
Penela, Portugal, Spain
Castle of Penela is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky hill in Penela, Coimbra District, central Portugal, serving as a key stronghold in the Mondego defensive line during the Reconquista.
Originating possibly from pre-Roman times with Roman watchtower elements, it was significantly developed after 1064 under Count Sesnando Davides following Ferdinand I of León's conquest of Coimbra, featuring 19-meter-high walls, arrow slits, and machicolations in a semi-triangular layout with three main gates including the Clock Tower Porta.
Expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries with twelve towers (four preserved), a castelejo, and ducal palace under figures like Pedro, Duke of Coimbra, it endured the 1755 earthquake's damage and now stands as a national monument offering panoramic views, free access, and insights into Romanesque-Gothic military architecture.
