Castle of San Pedro de Latarce
San Pedro de Latarce, Spain, Spain
Castle of San Pedro de Latarce is one of Valladolid's oldest fortresses, built at the end of the 12th century by Alfonso IX of León as a defensive outpost to bolster the border against the Kingdom of Castilla.
The oval-shaped structure used ancient tapial construction with lime and large stone aggregates, enhanced by paired rod needles for stability, and later housed a Bazán family palace with grand windows overlooking a now-lost medieval bridge.
Abandoned over time, its noble interiors were dismantled in the 18th century for external buildings, leading to disputes, before becoming a granary, residence, and farm outbuildings that now stand disused; the local council acquired it between 1999 and 2013 for 120,000€ and funded initial architectural surveys in 2008.
