Castle of Santa Pola
Spain, Spain
Castle of Santa Pola, also known as Castillo-Fortaleza de Santa Pola, is a 16th-century Renaissance fortress located in the heart of Santa Pola, Alicante province in Spain's Valencian Community.
Built in 1554-1557 under King Philip II as part of the coastal defense plan against Berber pirate raids, its layered design includes Muslim-era ruins at the highest Torreta level, 16th-century weaponry yard and Santa Barbara chapel in the middle, and 18th-century lower additions now used for parking.
Today housing the Sea and Fishing Museums, a chapel, and exhibition halls, the well-preserved structure offers panoramic coastal views and exemplifies early military architecture based on Renaissance theoretical treatises.
