Castle of Segura de la Sierra
Spain, Spain
The Castle of Segura de la Sierra is a medieval fortress crowning a hilltop in the white village of Segura de la Sierra, Jaén province, Andalusia, Spain, within the Sierra de Segura natural park.
Originating from Iberian and Roman times but fortified by Muslims in the 12th century under Almohad rule with walls and a medina, it was conquered by Christians in 1241 under Ferdinand III and granted to the Order of Santiago, who expanded it in the 13th-14th centuries into a double-enclosure stronghold featuring a trapezoidal alcazarejo, four battlemented towers including a square keep, Arab baths, a chapel, rock-hewn cisterns, and an outer wall with semicircular towers.
Now restored as an interpretation center, it offers panoramic views and showcases the site's layered history from Reconquista battles to later Napoleonic conflicts.
