Castle of Sigüenza
Spain, Spain
The Castle of Sigüenza is a majestic 12th-century fortress dominating the hilltop town of Sigüenza in Guadalajara province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, originally built over Roman and Visigothic foundations and expanded from an 8th-century Moorish alcazaba.
Retaken by Bishop Bernard d'Agen in 1123 during the Reconquista, it served as the powerful bishops' residence for centuries—hosting figures like Cardinal Mendoza who added Renaissance refinements—while enduring sieges, royal imprisonments like Doña Blanca in 1355, and defenses against Navarrese raids, featuring robust walls, a bulwarked main gate with machicolations, a central patio well, and Romanesque chapel.
Damaged in the Peninsular and Carlist Wars plus the 1936 Civil War, it was meticulously restored from 1970 and now operates as the Parador de Sigüenza hotel, blending medieval authenticity with modern luxury amid panoramic views.
