Castle of St John the Baptist
Santa Cruz, Spain, Spain
Castle of St John the Baptist, known as Castillo de San Juan Bautista or Black Castle, is a 17th-century coastal fortress in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.
Built between 1641 and 1644 from black volcanic stone at Caleta de Negros, it was the second-most important defense after Castillo de San Cristóbal, famously helping repel Admiral Horatio Nelson's 1797 British invasion attempt.
Rebuilt in 1765 with a cylindrical sea-facing tower, it served militarily until 1924, became a museum in 1948, and now stands as a historic monument near Parque Marítimo César Manrique, drawing visitors for its resilient heritage and annual reenactments.
