Castle of Tarifa
Spain, Spain
Castle of Tarifa, commonly known as Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno, is the main medieval fortress dominating Tarifa in Cádiz province, southern Spain, constructed in 960 AD by Caliph Abd-ar-Rahman III as a trapezoidal alcázaba to defend the Strait of Gibraltar against Viking and African raids.
Conquered by Sancho IV in 1292 and defended heroically in 1296 by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán—earning his "el Bueno" title after sacrificing his son's life rather than surrendering—it boasts 15 robust towers, diamond merlons added post-Reconquista, and possible Roman foundations.
Housing a 14th-century Gothic church (Iglesia de Santa María) over ancient walls, this national monument withstood sieges through the Peninsular War, offering stunning sea views today.
