Castle of the Dukes of Alba
Alba de Tormes, Spain, Spain
Castle of the Dukes of Alba in Alba de Tormes, Salamanca province, Castilla y León, Spain, traces its origins to a 12th-century watchtower built by Ferdinand II of León, expanded into a full fortress by Sancho IV of Castile in the 13th century.
Rebuilt as a grand palace-fortress in the 15th-16th centuries by the powerful House of Alba, including García Álvarez de Toledo and the Iron Duke Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, it featured lavish Renaissance interiors like the Armory Room's frescoes depicting the Battle of Mühlberg, six towers, and Italianate galleries.
Damaged by wars, earthquakes, French invasions in 1809-1812, and deliberate burning, only the imposing four-story homage tower survives today amid ruins, restored to showcase its historical splendor and Alba lineage.
