Castle of Turégano
Spain, Spain
Castle of Turégano is a unique 15th-century medieval fortress in Turégano, Segovia province, Spain, built around an existing 12th-century Romanesque church of San Miguel Arcángel on the site of an ancient Celtiberian castro and possible Arab fortress.
Commissioned in 1471 by Bishop Juan Arias Dávila after Castile's civil wars, it features a rectangular enclosure with cylindrical towers adapted for firearms, machicolations, and an integrated church that served as both spiritual center and defensive core, with later Gothic and Renaissance additions by architects like Juan Guas.
Used as a state prison for figures like Antonio Pérez, secretary to Philip II, and visited by monarchs including Fernando the Catholic, its ruins preserve this rare church-castle hybrid amid panoramic views, now a protected monument open to visitors.
