Castle of Urueña
Urueña, Spain, Spain
Castle of Urueña crowns the southeastern edge of Spain's sole "Villa del Libro" in Valladolid province, Castilla y León, constructed around 1060 by Fernando I el Magno of Castile atop Roman fort remains.
This rectangular medieval stronghold, strategically positioned on the páramo overlooking Tierra de Campos amid Castile-León border wars, features semicircular perimeter towers except the square southern Torre del Homenaje and connects via the "Peinador de la Reina" or Torreón de Doña Urraca to the near-perfect 12th-13th century muralla promoted by Infanta Sancha.
Only exterior walls survive today within the Conjunto Histórico-Artístico declared in 1975, offering visitors a glimpse of its turbulent Reconquista history from Alfonso IX's 1217 occupation to the Girón family's 15th-century lordship.
