Castle Salem is a historic fortified house near Rosscarbery in County Cork, Ireland. Originally built around 1470 as Benduff Castle, it is a well-preserved medieval tower house associated with Catherine Fitzgerald, a daughter of the Earl of Desmond. The castle later came into the ownership of William Morris, a Quaker, who renamed it “Salem,” meaning peace. Over the centuries, the structure evolved from a defensive fortress into a family residence, while retaining many of its original medieval features, including thick stone walls, internal passages, and a tower keep. The property has been owned by the Daly family since 1895 and is still occupied today. Castle Salem is notable for its connection to Quaker history in Ireland and for being one of the few privately owned historic castles where visitors may, by arrangement, tour the building and learn about its rich heritage.
