It was first mentioned in records in 1341 when King John of Luxembourg pledged it to Oldřich of Valdek. The castle was originally built on a rocky promontory overlooking the Sázava River, serving as a strategic royal foundation. It became notorious as a residence for marauding knights who robbed caravans, leading to its destruction by the king’s army in 1467.

Despite its ruin, the castle remains an attractive destination due to its well-preserved walls, breathtaking views of the river and surrounding countryside, and serene, elevated position at about 300 meters above sea level. Today it is a protected cultural monument within the Cizov Nature Reserve, popular with hikers, cyclists, and climbers who appreciate its peaceful atmosphere and historic charm.
