Castlebernard is a historic area near the town of Bandon in County Cork, Ireland, best known for the ruins of Castle Bernard, a large country house built in the late 18th century on the site of an older medieval O'Mahony clan castle. The estate reflects several layers of Irish history, combining the remains of a medieval stronghold with later Georgian and Gothic Revival architecture. The original castle was associated with the O'Mahony family, while the later mansion became the seat of the Earls of Bandon. Castle Bernard was burned in June 1921 during the Irish War of Independence and was never rebuilt, leaving the roofless ruins that remain today. Today, Castlebernard is valued mainly for its historical significance and picturesque ruins, which stand as a reminder of the region’s medieval heritage, aristocratic estates, and Ireland’s turbulent early 20th century history.
