Castlekirk, also known as Hen’s Castle (Caisleán na Circe), is a medieval stone castle located on a small island in Lough Corrib in County Galway, Ireland. Built around 1235 for Feidhlim, King of Connacht, it served as a defensive stronghold during a period of regional power struggles. Over time, the castle became associated with the O’Flaherty clan and is linked to the famous Irish historical figure Gráinne Mhaol (Grace O’Malley), who is said to have defended it from attack. The castle is a rectangular two-storey keep with corner towers and thick stone walls, reflecting the military architecture of medieval Ireland. Although now a ruin, it remains an important National Monument and a notable landmark in the scenic Lough Corrib area. Because it stands on an island, access is limited, but it continues to attract interest for its historical significance, picturesque setting, and connections to Ireland’s rich medieval heritage.
