Castlelough Castle is a medieval ruin located on a small promontory beside Lough Leane near Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland. Built during the 15th or 16th century, and possibly on the site of an earlier fortress, it became one of the strongholds of the powerful MacCarthy Mór dynasty, who ruled much of South Kerry during the medieval period. The castle occupies a scenic position overlooking the lake and was once an important defensive residence. Historical records note that Donal Óg MacCarthy, King of Desmond, died there in 1390, highlighting its significance as a Gaelic noble residence. Although the castle was ruined after the Cromwellian period and only fragments of its walls survive today, it remains a picturesque landmark surrounded by the natural beauty of Killarney. Its lakeside setting and association with the MacCarthy rulers make it an intriguing reminder of Kerry’s medieval past.
