Castlepook Castle, also known as Castle Pook, is a ruined 14th century Norman tower house located near Doneraile in County Cork, Ireland, on the lower slopes of the Ballyhoura Mountains. It was built around 1380 for the Synan family, an Anglo-Norman family that held land in the area for centuries. The castle stands on a rocky outcrop and was designed as a fortified residence, with thick limestone walls, narrow defensive windows, and commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Although much of the structure is now in ruins, significant portions of the tower still survive and offer insight into medieval Irish castle architecture. Its Irish name, Caisleán an Phúca, means “Castle of the Púca,” a supernatural creature from Irish folklore, linking the site to local legends and nearby caves associated with the mythical being. Today, Castlepook Castle remains an atmospheric historic landmark and an important reminder of County Cork’s medieval past.
