Cerco de Artajona
Artajona, Spain, Spain
Cerco de Artajona is an impressive 11th-century medieval fortified enclosure completely encircling the hilltop village of Artajona in Navarre, northern Spain, featuring a continuous stone wall originally equipped with 17 defensive towers of which 9 remain remarkably intact.
Constructed starting around 1085 under the clerics of Saint Cernin of Toulouse to protect against Castilian incursions, this well-preserved structure briefly made Artajona an independent kingdom between 1153 and 1158 while serving as one of Navarre's most significant frontier defenses.
Today the site offers visitors atmospheric walks along cobblestone streets past the towers, blending military history with panoramic rural views and nearby prehistoric dolmens in central Navarre's rolling landscape.
