Český Šternberk Castle, built around 1241 by Zdeslav of Divišov, is one of the best-preserved early Gothic castles in the Czech Republic. It sits prominently on a steep granite cliff above the Sázava River in Central Bohemia.

The castle was designed initially for defense but underwent several expansions and modifications, including Renaissance fortifications and Baroque interior renovations in the 17th century. It survived sieges and wars, including destruction attempts in the 15th century, and features a massive cylindrical tower and a fortified courtyard.

The castle remained in the Sternberg family for centuries, except during the communist era when it was nationalized, though the family retained a role in managing the site. After the Velvet Revolution, ownership was returned to the Sternbergs, who still manage the castle today.

It houses historical furnishings, Baroque stuccos, and a rich collection of Thirty Years’ War copper engravings, drawing visitors to enjoy its Gothic architecture and scenic views of the Sázava valley.
