Originally built in 1731-1733 in Baroque style on the site of an earlier hunting lodge named Gyldenlund, it was commissioned by Princess Charlotte Amalie and later expanded in the 1880s by architect Ferdinand Meldahl into a French Renaissance-style palace with a central dome, corner risalits, and elegant symmetry.
Birthplace of kings Christian X of Denmark and Haakon VII of Norway, it served as a royal residence until the early 20th century and later as a biological research station until 2017, now functioning as a cultural event venue with concerts, exhibitions, and tours amid its historic 14-hectare gardens blending Baroque and Romantic designs.
