Chlum
Czech Republic, Czech Republic (Czechia)
Chlum, Czech Republic, has a history dating back to the 13th century when a fortified settlement was established, with the first owners being the Lords of Strakonice.
The area evolved through several noble families, including the Rosenbergs, Slavata, and Lobkowicz. A Baroque castle was built on the site in the early 18th century, which was later renovated and expanded by Duke Francis V d’Este in the 19th century. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria inherited the castle in 1875 and used it as a summer residence, giving it its present neo-Baroque appearance after remodeling.
The settlement had significant industrial and agricultural development over the centuries, including fishpond cultivation, glassmaking, and iron production, though much of the industrial activity was halted by Franz Ferdinand. Today, Chlum maintains its historical charm alongside natural beauty, reflecting its rich past and cultural heritage.
