Citadellet - Landskrona Fortress
Landskrona, Sweden, Sweden
Citadellet, known as Landskrona Fortress, is a remarkably preserved 16th-century bastion fort in Landskrona, Scania, southern Sweden, constructed between 1549 and 1559 by Denmark's King Christian III to defend against Swedish incursions.
Featuring multiple intact moats including a central island castle moat up to 70 meters wide and artillery bastions, it passed to Sweden via the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, briefly served Danish forces in 1676 during the Scanian War, and later functioned as a prison from the 18th century, including for women in forced labor until 1940.
Today, this Nordic region's best-preserved earth-and-masonry fortress hosts cultural events, artist studios, gardens, a café, and museums amid green spaces, with historical sites like a 16th-century dungeon drawing visitors.
