Clifden Castle is a striking ruined Gothic Revival manor house located just west of Clifden in the Connemara region of County Galway, Ireland. Built around 1818 for John D'Arcy, the founder of Clifden, it originally served as the family home at the center of a large estate overlooking the rugged Atlantic coastline. After the hardships of the Great Famine and changes in ownership, the estate declined, and the castle eventually fell into ruin in the late nineteenth century. Today, only its impressive stone shell remains, with towers, arched windows, and ivy-covered walls giving it a romantic and atmospheric appearance. Visitors can reach the castle via a short walk from the famous Sky Road, one of Connemara’s most scenic routes. The site is valued for its historical significance, dramatic setting, and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and coastline, making it a popular landmark for history enthusiasts and photographers.
