Clomantagh Castle is a well-preserved 15th-century tower house located near Freshford in County Kilkenny. Built by the powerful Butler family, it served as a fortified residence and formed part of a larger defensive complex surrounded by strong bawn walls and other medieval structures. The castle is notable for its impressive defensive design, including a fortified entrance, spiral staircase, guard chambers, and a rare sheela-na-gig carving on one of its exterior corner stones. It remained in Butler ownership until the Cromwellian confiscations of the 17th century, after which it passed to other owners and gradually evolved with the addition of a farmhouse and farm buildings. Today, Clomantagh Castle is regarded as an outstanding example of a medieval Irish tower house. Carefully restored in recent decades, it combines medieval architecture with later rural history and continues to be preserved as an important part of County Kilkenny’s heritage.
