Clonreher Castle is a medieval tower house located near Portlaoise in County Laois, in the townland of Clonreher, Cappagh North. Dating from the early 16th century, it was probably built by the O’Dowling clan, one of the powerful Gaelic septs of Laois, before later passing into the hands of English settlers during the Tudor period. The castle is a substantial four-storey structure with projecting corner towers, thick stone walls, vaulted chambers, and defensive features designed for protection during a turbulent era of conflict between Irish clans and colonial authorities. Over time it became associated with families such as the Dunkirleys and Hartpoles, who held lands in the region. Although now a ruin, Clonreher Castle is considered one of the most significant surviving Gaelic tower houses in County Laois. Recent conservation efforts have helped stabilize the structure and preserve its historic features, highlighting its importance as a reminder of the county’s medieval heritage.
