Conjunto Monumental de la Alcazaba de Almería
Spain, Spain
The Conjunto Monumental de la Alcazaba de Almería is Spain's largest surviving Muslim fortress after Granada's Alhambra, a sprawling 25,000-square-meter hilltop citadel in Almería, Andalusia, dominating the city's skyline with its crenellated walls and panoramic Mediterranean views.
Commissioned in 955 by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III on pre-existing Roman and early Arab fortifications, it divides into three enclosures: the outermost first served as a residential quarter with houses, baths, and cisterns; the central second formed a self-contained palatial city for governors, complete with a mosque and gardens; and the uppermost Christian third, added post-1489 reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs, features robust triangular stone walls, round towers, and artillery adaptations.
Damaged by earthquakes like the 1522 event and used defensively until the 19th century, including during the Carlist Wars, it now stands as a protected UNESCO-recognized site blending Arab brickwork, horseshoe arches, and later restorations, open free to visitors exploring its layered history.
