Coolhill Castle is a striking medieval fortress located on a steep cliff overlooking the River Barrow in County Kilkenny. Believed to date from the 13th century, it was built in a commanding position that provided excellent natural defenses and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The castle is unusual for its tall circular keep, which features a fortified entrance, spiral staircase, murder hole, fireplaces, and defensive machicolations used to protect against attackers. Over the centuries, it was associated with families such as the de la Rupe (Roche) and Mountgarret families before being confiscated during the Cromwellian period. Today, Coolhill Castle is a National Monument and one of County Kilkenny’s most distinctive medieval structures. Although access is limited, its dramatic riverside setting, impressive architecture, and long history make it a notable landmark in Ireland’s castle heritage.
