Coonagh Castle is a ruined 13th-century Norman stronghold located near Doon in County Limerick. Built around 1225 by William and Matilda de Marisco, it served as the principal manor of the medieval district of Coonagh and was an important centre of local administration and authority. The castle changed hands several times during the medieval period as a result of political disputes and royal intervention. After being confiscated from the de Marisco family in the 1230s, it passed through a number of influential owners before eventually falling into decline and being abandoned. Today, the surviving ruins include parts of a substantial Norman keep with exceptionally thick walls and a stair turret. Although much of the structure has collapsed, Coonagh Castle remains an important example of early Anglo-Norman military architecture and offers a valuable insight into medieval life in County Limerick.
