Cowbridge Physic Garden
Cowbridge, Wales, United Kingdom
Cowbridge Physic Garden is a 0.5-acre (0.20 ha) medicinal herb garden located in the ancient market town of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.
Created by the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust starting in 2004 and officially opened in June 2008 by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, the garden sits within a walled enclosure that dates partly to the 13th century and was formerly part of the 18th-century formal gardens belonging to the Edmondes family of Old Hall.
The garden was designed to replicate an 18th-century physic garden style, featuring twelve formal medicinal beds grouped by the healing properties of their plants for different parts of the body or medical conditions, and it includes only plant species that were found in Britain before 1800, with no modern hybrids or varieties.
After falling into neglect as an overgrown wilderness by the end of the 20th century, the site was transformed by volunteers into what is now described as a small oasis of calm and tranquillity, easily accessible for wheelchair users with flat paths and a ramp entrance, open daily with free entry from 10am–6pm in summer and 10am–4pm in winter.
