Creagh Castle is a historic castle complex located at Castlesaffron near Doneraile in County Cork, Ireland. Its oldest surviving feature is a medieval five-storey tower house that was originally associated with the Roche family and later became linked to the Creagh family, from whom the castle takes its name. In the early 19th century, a larger country house known as Creagh House was built beside the tower, incorporating the older structure into the estate. The castle is noted for its defensive medieval features, including thick stone walls, guard chambers, a murder hole, spiral stairways, and remnants of its original fortifications. The estate is also known for its impressive Gothic-style entrance gateway, which has been praised by historians for its craftsmanship and architectural design. Today, Creagh Castle remains an important part of County Cork’s architectural and historical heritage, reflecting both Ireland’s medieval past and the evolution of its country estates during the 18th and 19th centuries.
