Croom Castle is a historic fortress in the village of Croom, County Limerick, strategically located beside a bend in the River Maigue. The site was originally associated with an earlier Gaelic stronghold, but the castle that survives today was largely developed by the powerful FitzGerald family in the late 12th or early 13th century and became one of their principal residences. The castle gave rise to the famous FitzGerald battle cry and motto, “Crom Abú” (“Croom Forever”), reflecting its importance to the family and to medieval Irish politics. Over the centuries, it was involved in numerous conflicts, changed ownership several times, and gradually declined after the 17th century. Today, parts of the medieval castle remain incorporated into later buildings, and the site stands as a reminder of Croom’s long history as a regional center of power. Its riverside setting and surviving ruins make it an important local landmark and a notable example of Ireland’s medieval heritage.
