Cullahill Castle is a striking medieval tower house in County Laois that was built around 1425 as the principal stronghold of the MacGillapatrick family, rulers of Upper Ossory. Standing on a rocky hill above the village of Cullahill, it served as an important defensive and residential centre for the clan. The castle was involved in several conflicts during the 15th and 16th centuries and was repeatedly attacked by forces from nearby Kilkenny. Around 1650, during the Cromwellian campaign in Ireland, it was heavily damaged by artillery and subsequently abandoned, leaving it in ruins. Today, the remains of the five-storey tower still dominate the landscape and are among the most impressive medieval ruins in County Laois. The site is particularly notable for its surviving vaulted chambers, mural passages, nearby chapel ruins, and a rare Sheela na Gig carving on the castle’s exterior wall.
