Currahill Castle is a medieval tower house located near Kilmaganny in County Kilkenny. Built by the Butler family, it served as a fortified residence and stronghold, with records linking the site to the family from the 16th century onward. The castle later changed ownership following the Cromwellian confiscations of Irish lands in the 17th century. The structure is an impressive example of Irish tower-house architecture, featuring thick stone walls, a fortified entrance protected by a murder hole, vaulted chambers, narrow defensive openings, fireplaces, and living quarters. Rising about 17 metres high, it was designed to provide both security and domestic comfort. Although now partly ruined, Currahill Castle remains a notable historic landmark in the Kilkenny countryside. Its surviving walls and architectural features offer a valuable insight into medieval life, defensive design, and the history of the powerful Butler family in Ireland.
