Dalaborg
Sweden, Sweden
Dalaborg is a medieval castle ruin located in Mellerud Municipality on the shores of Lake Vänern in Dalsland, western Sweden.
Constructed in 1304 by Dukes Erik and Valdemar Magnusson, sons of King Magnus Ladulås, during their rebellion against King Birger, it featured strategic defenses like moats, ramparts, and a blockhouse to control regional trade and withstand sieges, including attacks by Birger in 1306 and Norwegians in 1308.
In 1388, Queen Margaret I was acclaimed regent of Sweden here, pivotal to the Kalmar Union, before its destruction by peasants in the 1434 Engelbrekt Rebellion against Danish rule under Eric of Pomerania; today, visitors access remnants via paths, with a model at Mellerud Museum.
