Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre is a popular historic attraction in the coastal town of Dalkey, just south of Dublin. The castle dates to around 1390 and was originally built by local merchants as a fortified warehouse to protect valuable goods arriving through Dalkey’s busy medieval port. It is one of the few surviving examples of the seven town castles that once stood in the area. Known historically as Goat Castle, the building later served as a residence and civic building before being transformed into a heritage center. The restored castle preserves many medieval features, including thick stone walls, battlements, and a defensive "murder hole" used to protect the entrance. Today, Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre brings history to life through interactive tours, costumed actors, exhibitions, and cultural displays. Visitors can learn about medieval Dalkey, local writers and artists, and the town’s rich maritime heritage, making it one of Dublin’s most engaging historical attractions.
