Davalillo Castle
Spain, Spain
Davalillo Castle is a 13th-century Romanesque fortress dramatically perched on a hilltop overlooking the Ebro River valley near San Asensio in La Rioja, northern Spain, strategically positioned to guard Castilian territories against Navarrese incursions.
Built during the reign of Alfonso VIII with a robust rectangular enclosure, square keep tower featuring a ground-floor chapel, defensive curtain walls, and a main gate protected by twin hollow towers, it later belonged to powerful families like the Manriques, Dukes of Nájera.
Though now in ruins after the abandonment of the original Davalillo village—its population shifting to nearby San Asensio—the site offers breathtaking vineyard panoramas and exemplifies La Rioja's medieval defensive architecture on the Route of the Castles.
