De Lacy Castle, more commonly known as Ballingarry Castle, is a historic medieval tower house located in the village of Ballingarry in County Limerick, Ireland. The castle is traditionally associated with the Norman De Lacy family, who were influential landholders in the region, although local legend also links the site to the Knights Templar. Built around the late medieval period, the castle served as a fortified residence and played a role in several turbulent chapters of Irish history. It was involved in the Desmond Rebellions during the 16th century, later passed through various owners, was occupied by Cromwellian forces in the 17th century, and was damaged during conflicts associated with the Williamite War in 1691. The structure remains an impressive rectangular tower house, rising prominently above the village despite centuries of change. During the 19th century it was repaired and adapted for residential use, earning the nickname “Parson’s Castle,” and at different times served as a barracks and even a hospital. Today, De Lacy Castle stands as a notable local landmark and an important reminder of County Limerick’s medieval heritage. The castle is situated on private property and is generally viewed from the surrounding area rather than visited internally.
