Demir Kapija is a small town and municipality in southern North Macedonia, situated along the Vardar River at the dramatic limestone Demir Kapija Gorge, known as the "Iron Gate" from its Ottoman Turkish name, at an elevation of about 115 meters. Its history stretches back to ancient Paeonian times around 3000 years ago with a fortress on Ramniste hill, later evolving through Macedonian, Roman, Byzantine, and medieval Slav periods as Prosek, a strategic stronghold used by figures like Dobromir Hriz in the 13th century. Under Ottoman rule from 1385, it shifted from the hilltop fortress to a lower settlement called Banja near thermal springs, serving as a key trade and military point along the Vardar road. In modern times, it played roles in World War II conflicts and liberation efforts, now thriving as a wine region with historic wineries like Popova Kula and a population of around 3,700 amid scenic vineyards and archaeological sites.
