The Derawan Islands, located off the coast of East Kalimantan in Indonesia’s Sulawesi Sea, are a dazzling archipelago of 31 islands celebrated for their pristine beauty and extraordinary marine biodiversity. Among the most well-known are Derawan, Maratua, Kakaban, and Sangalaki, each offering a unique blend of natural wonders and cultural charm.

The islands are part of the Coral Triangle, one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth, and are home to over 870 species of reef fish, 500 species of coral, and rare marine creatures such as manta rays, whale sharks, dugongs, and green sea turtles. Kakaban Island is particularly famous for its stingless jellyfish lake, where visitors can swim among thousands of these ethereal creatures without fear of being stung. Maratua Island, the largest in the group, features dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden caves, and a tranquil lagoon, while also serving as a nesting ground for sea turtles. It is also home to a small airport, making it more accessible to travelers seeking remote luxury.

Derawan Island itself is a lively fishing village with stilt houses over turquoise waters, offering a more rustic and immersive experience. Sangalaki Island, meanwhile, is a sanctuary for manta rays and a key site for sea turtle conservation, where visitors can witness hatchlings being released into the sea.
