Derryhivenny Castle

Republic of Ireland, Ireland

Derryhivenny Castle, also known as Derryhiveny Castle, is a well-preserved 17th century tower house located near Portumna in County Galway, on the western bank of the River Shannon in Ireland. Built in 1643 by Daniel O'Madden of the influential O'Madden clan, which controlled the surrounding area for centuries, the castle is one of the last traditional Irish tower houses constructed before this style of building declined. The four-storey structure features elements of late Jacobean architecture, including distinctive chimney stacks, mullioned windows, fireplaces, and defensive features such as a wall walk and remnants of a surrounding bawn. An inscription on the castle confirms its construction date and builder, making it an important historical landmark. Today, Derryhivenny Castle is a protected National Monument and is valued for both its architectural significance and its connection to the history of the O'Madden family and medieval Ireland. Its rural setting and strong state of preservation make it a notable attraction for visitors interested in Irish heritage.
