Dhat Al-Hajj
Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia
Dhat Al-Hajj is a historic site located in the Tabuk Province of Saudi Arabia, near the border with Jordan, which served as a vital rest stop and watering place on the Hajj pilgrimage route connecting Egypt and Syria to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
Established primarily in the late 16th century under Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the site features a well-preserved three-story square fort built around a courtyard and reservoir, designed to support the needs of pilgrims on their journey.
The fort has a long history, being referenced as early as the 13th century as a key caravanserai along the route. Despite periods of ruin and occupation by local Bedouin tribes, it was restored multiple times and continued to play an important role in safeguarding pilgrims traveling through the harsh desert terrain. Its name, meaning "the place of the pilgrimage," reflects its enduring significance on this ancient and sacred route.
