Qishlah
Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia
Qishlah (also spelled Qishla) in Saudi Arabia refers to historic military barracks or fort complexes, the most prominent being the Qishlah Palace in the center of Ha’il city in the Ha’il region.
The Ha’il Qishlah was built in the 1940s (1941–1943) by order of King Abdulaziz during the principality of Prince Abdulaziz bin Musaad, using traditional Najdi mud‑brick and stone construction, and designed as a large rectangular two‑story complex about 142.8 × 141.2 meters, with 8.5‑meter‑high walls, eight watchtowers, two main gates (east and south), an open courtyard, a Najdi‑style mosque and many rooms used for soldiers’ dormitories, offices, armories and royal administration.
Its name comes from the Turkish word kışla meaning barracks or fort, and its original purpose was to serve as the central location for army troops arriving in Ha’il; later it was used as a prison and then as a heritage site, officially designated as a historical landmark in 1995. Separate Ottoman‑era Qishlah fortifications also existed in Mecca and Jeddah, but the Mecca Qishla was demolished to build hotels near the Grand Mosque and the Jeddah Qishla largely lies buried under modern defense buildings.
Today, the Ha’il Qishlah Palace is known as one of the largest and oldest mud buildings in the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula, a major architectural and cultural landmark in the historic core of Ha’il, and while it has at times been closed to the public, it remains a key symbol of the city’s military and Najdi heritage.
