Donskoy Monastery
Moscow, Russia, Russia
The Donskoy Monastery in Moscow, Russia, is a historic fortified complex founded in 1591-1592 by Tsar Fyodor I and boyar Boris Godunov to commemorate Moscow's defense against the Crimean Khan's invasion, housing the revered Our Lady of the Don icon.
Its architecture blends medieval and Moscow Baroque styles, featuring the small Old Cathedral from 1593 with a single dome and kokoshniki arches, the grand five-domed New Cathedral built 1684-1698 under Tsarina Sophia with Ukrainian-influenced dome placement and ornate iconostasis, towering red-brick walls with 12 towers erected 1686-1711, and the elegant Tikhvin Gate-Church.
The site endured invasions, Soviet closure, and served various secular uses before reopening for worship in the 1990s, remaining an active Russian Orthodox men's monastery today amid serene grounds.
